History of Indiana

  empire state building

The State of Indiana, situated in the Midwestern region of the United States of America, is a diverse state with several small industrial cities and a few large urban areas. The present-day Indiana has been colonized since before the development of the Hopewell culture. In fact, from the year 1000 up to 1400, the region was a part of the Mississippian culture. The Miami and the Shawnee were the major Native American tribes that inhabited the area during that time. In the 17th century, the area was claimed for New France. At the end of the French and Indian War, this region was finally handed over to the Kingdom of Great Britain as part of the settlement.

Following the American Revolution, the area was given to the United States and was made a part of the Northwest Territory. Thereafter, the area was named as the Indiana Territory. The Territory adopted a constitution on June 29, 1816 and it was ultimately added to the Union as the 19th state on December 11, 1816. Migration, mostly from Ohio and Kentucky, led to a 2-fold increase in the population of the state by 1820. The first capital of state was in the southern Indiana city of Corydon. The constitution, which is now in force, was adopted at a convention assembled at Corydon in the year 1851. Later, Indianapolis was made the capital of the state.
