General Information

Named after the Native American tribe of Ioway, the State of Iowa is part of Midwest United States. Bordering Iowa are Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Missouri.

Capital city of Des Moines is also the largest city. Iowa has beautifully preserved its history for visitors and each of its 24 National Historic Landmarks take us back in time to the events in the past. Visit Amana Colonies to experience the seven real German villages established over a century ago, or travel to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library & Museum Cottage and witness the Birthplace Cottage of President Herbert Hoover. Then there are the Mines of Spain Recreation Area also called as Julien Dubuque's Mines, home to several archaeological sites offering insight into the history of American Indian settlement and their active participation in lead mining and other trades.

Numerous beautiful natural and man-made lakes are present in Iowa with the admired ones being Spirit Lake, the two Okoboji Lakes, Lake Odessa and Lake Red Rock. Four rivers namely Mississippi, Missouri, Big Sioux and Des Moines River flow on the Iowa terrain. There is scope for plenty of outdoor activity as the water bodies in combination with scenic expanses make camping, hiking, biking, swimming and fishing a pleasure in this state. Located in the humid continental zone, Iowa has a relatively intense climate characterized by summers that are usually hot and cold winters, making spring and fall the perfect times to visit Iowa.

For travelers who love to drive their way through nature’s bounty, Iowa offers the ideal driving experience through Iowa Scenic Byways that pass through river valleys, countryside, wildlife reserves, and provide some blissfully captivating scenes.
