Des Moines Art Center

The Des Moines Art Center, situated in Des Moines, Iowa, is a well known art museum in the state. It holds an extensive collection of sculpture, modern art, paintings, and mixed media. The major attractions at the Center include a large exhibition hall, a spectacular rose garden, magnificent outdoor sculptures, and an external reflecting pool. The exhibition hall rotates through a number of themes during the year.

The most impressive paintings displayed in the Museum include Edward Hoppers "Automat", which was used for a cover of Time magazine; Bacon's "Portrait of Pope Innocent", which appeared in Robert Hughes "Shock of the New" BBC series in the early 1980s; and Stanton MacDonald Wright's "Synchrony", which is has been reproduced in numerous texts about the artist and the movement he represented. Other main artists featured in the Center’s permanent collection include Georgia O’ Keeffe, Gerhard Richter, Claude Monet, Andy Warhol, and Paul Gauguin.

The Museum is also known for its architecture that is a combination of Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. Designed by Eliel Saarinen, the original Art Center was established in 1948. Today, the Des Moines Art Center also houses a restaurant, a gift shop, and a reference library. It also hosts several seminars and workshops on a regular basis. The Museum Shop features a large selection of books, cards, jewelry, art magazines, calendars, educational toys, and other unique gifts.

This Art Center is considered to be a world-class museum in the heart of the Midwest. Its significant art collection represents the artists of the 19th and 20th century, with special emphasis on contemporary art. This unique collection is housed in three main buildings; each designed by an internationally acclaimed architect-I. M. Pei, Eliel Saarinen, and Richard Meier. The Des Moines Art Center is a “must-see” for art-lovers all over the world.
