loess hills, dorothy pecaut nature center

The Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, situated in the panoramic Loess Hills of Western Iowa, is surrounded by more than 1, 000 acres (4.05 sq-km) of Loess Hills’ prairies and woodlands. Located within the boundaries of the Stone State Park in the Sioux City, Iowa, the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center is best known for its outdoor recreational opportunities. Several miles of nature trails are made available to the visitors for hiking. These trails lead to several forest and prairie viewpoints.

The Nature Center is home to a wide variety of wildflowers, including skeleton plant, yucca, and buffalo berry. The woodlands surrounding the Center abound in basswood, walnut trees, and bur oak. The Interpretive building at the Center houses a wide variety of exhibits, including a 400-gallon aquarium of native fish, a “walk-under” prairie, and natural history dioramas. The Junior League Legacy Gallery features several hands-on-exhibits on the animals and plants of the area.

The Discovery Area at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center offers a unique opportunity to the visitors to handle antlers, fossils, furs, and other artifacts. Other facilities at the Nature Center include 260-seat classrooms, a resource library, and 14,000 square feet (1300 square-meters) of office and exhibit space, a bird-viewing area, an outdoor amphitheater, and butterfly and wildflower gardens.

The Resource Library allows the visitors to view a video, browse through environmental magazines, and carry out research on Loess Hills’ topics. The main permanent exhibits at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center include the Loess Hills natural history exhibits, interactive prairie, woodland, and wetland exhibits, and live native fish and reptile exhibits. The Center also provides meeting rooms for rent.
