Dubuque, the county seat of the Dubuque County and the eight-largest city in the State of Iowa, is situated along the Mississippi River, at the junction of three states: Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa. It is the oldest city in the state and serves as the main educational, industrial, commercial, and cultural center for the region. As this city played an integral role in the settlement of the state, it is often called the “Key City”.
Dubuque is best known for its rich culture and history. Its extraordinary architecture and an awesome river location attract thousands of tourists every year. A number of buildings in the city have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The major neighborhoods in the region include the Warehouse District, Jackson Park/Upper Main, Cable Car Square/Cathedral Square, the Central Business District, and the Lower Main. Situated in the east-central portion of the city, downtown Dubuque is home to the Central Business District of the city.
The major attractions in downtown Dubuque include the Grand River Center, the Fenelon Place Elevator, Five Flags Civic Center, Dubuque Shot Tower, Diamond Jo Casino, Grand Harbor Resort & Water-park, Dubuque County Courthouse, Washington Square, and the Carnegie-Stout Public Library. The North End area of Dubuque, on the other hand, is home to the Eagle Point Park, Mathias Ham House, Mt. Cavalry Cemetery, Linwood Cemetery, and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
The South End region, popularly known as ‘Little Dublin’, has been the traditional neighborhood of the Irish-Americans in the city. The main points of tourist interest in the South end area include the Louis Murphy Park, Valentine Park, St. Raphael’s Cathedral, the Wartburg Theological Seminary, and the Mines of Spain State Recreation Area. Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical gardens, Kennedy mall, Resurrection Catholic Church, and the Asbury Plaza are the major tourist attractions in the west end of the city.
