floyd monument

The Sergeant Floyd Monument, situated in Sioux City, Iowa, is a National Historic Landmark. It venerates the burial site of Charles Floyd, Jr., the U. S. Army Sergeant who died on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This 100 ft (30.48 m) obelisk of heavy Kettle River sandstone stands on the 23 acre (0.09 square-km) park land. The Monument was designed by the U.S. Army Engineers, Captain James C. Sanford   and Captain Hiram M. Chittenden, and was completed on May 30, 1901.

The U. S. Department of Interior recognized the Monument as the First National Historic landmark in 1960. The Monument has a 9 square-foot (0.83 square-meter) base and is 6 square feet (0.55 square-meters) at the top. It is capped with aluminum, which is connected to copper grounding wires in order to protect the Monument from lightning strikes.

The inner concrete core of the monument is 3 ½ square feet (0.32 sq-m) at the top and nearly 4 ½ square ft (0.41 sq-m) at the base. The bones of Sergeant Charles Floyd were placed in urns in the concrete core of the Monument. The major attractions nearby include the Sergeant Floyd River Museum and the Welcome Center.
