The Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, situated in West Branch, Iowa, commemorates the life of Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States. Herbert Hoover epitomized the ideal of distinctiveness and the self-made man. His adeptness as a mining engineer made him a millionaire by age 40. Having been brought up in the Quaker traditions of compassion and munificence, Hoover then embarked on a course of public service for the rest of his life.
Popularly known as the Herbert Hoover Birthplace, the Historic Site is preserved and managed by the National Park Service. The main buildings located on the grounds include the cottage where Hoover was born in 1874; the first West Branch school house; a replica of the blacksmith shop owned by his father; and the Quaker meeting house where the Hoover family worshipped. Other attractions on the Site include the gravesites of Herbert Hoover and his wife, Lou Henry Hoover; the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum; the Visitor Center; and the tall-grass prairie, encompassing an area of nearly 81 acres (0.33 sq-km). The Herbert Hoover Birthplace was designated as a National Historic Landmark on June 23, 1965 and was declared a National Historic Site on August 12, 1965.
