Iowa State Capitol

iowa state capitol

The Iowa State Capitol, situated in Des Moines, Iowa, was established in 1886. It houses the Iowa General Assembly and is the only 5-domed state capitol in the US. This magnificent State capitol building connotes the prodigious spirit of Iowa and is well known for its 19th century architecture. The building is made of brick and limestone from Missouri, Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio, and Illinois.

The Iowa State Capitol building features distinct types and colors of marble, works of art, fixtures, and carvings in wood and stone. The most prominent feature of the building is its 275-foot (84-m) tall dome, gilded with thin sheets of 23 karat pure gold. The four corner wings of the building have 4 smaller copper-covered domes on top of them. Each of these domes has a golden lantern at the top and is decorated with vertical lines of intermittent gold.

The ground floor of the Capitol building houses a cafeteria and many offices. The offices of the Governor and other State officials are housed on the first floor. The second floor of the building features the committee rooms, the senate & house chambers, and the state law library. The rotunda houses several large pieces of artwork. Iowa State Capitol is an architectural gem and an impressive Iowa Landmark. It attracts visitor from all over the world and symbolizes the representative government for the citizens of the state.
