The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, situated in the Sioux City, Iowa, is dedicated to the life of the explorers, Lewis and Clark, as they traveled through the Sioux City area during their expedition. Most exhibits focus on the death and burial of Charles Floyd, the U. S. Army Sergeant who died on the Expedition on August 20, 1804. The impressive exhibits at the Interpretive Center use several interactive devices to illustrate the finely tuned military operation of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The main exhibits include animatronic mannequins, flip books, computers, map making tools, stamping stations, lift and drop panels, hand-painted murals, informational doors and drums, brass rubbing stations, the changing-river exhibit, Indian artifacts, and replicas of the military equipment.
The Center also features a 15-minute videotape presentation, which is shown in the nearby Keelboat Theater. The Discovery Store at the Interpretive Center provides a wide range of gift items and books for people of all age groups. Other attractions at the Center include the 30 X 50 ft (9 X 15 m), 15-star, 15-stripe replica of the U. S. Flag that Lewis & Clark carried on the Expedition; and the 14-foot (4.3-m) tall bronze “Spirit of Discovery” sculpture.
The ‘Garden of Discovery’ displays over 200 species of plants collected between Onawa, Iowa, and the Niobrara River of Nebraska during the expedition. The bench at the center of the gardens is dedicated to Betty Strong by the members of the Sioux land Informational Group for the Blind (SIG-B). The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center gives an opportunity to its visitors to experience again the adventures of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and is a “must-see”.
