Madison County, situated in Iowa, is one of the five major counties that make up the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Winterset is the county seat of this County. Madison County is best known as the birth place of John Wayne. It is also well known for a number of covered bridges. The main bridges in the County include the Cedar Bridge, the Hogback Bridge, the Cutler Donahue Bridge, the Holliwell Bridge, the Imes Bridge, and the Roseman Bridge.
Madison County was established on January 13, 1846 and was named after the fourth President of the United States, James Madison. The County has been self-governed since 1849. The major cities and towns in the County include East Peru, Patterson, Truro, St. Charles, Earlham, Winterset, Bevington, and Macksburg.
Interstate 35, U. S. Highway 6, Iowa Highway 92, and U. S. Highway 169 are the major highways in the Madison County. The adjacent counties include the Dallas County to the north, the Warren County to the east, the Clarke County to the southeast, the Union County to the southwest, and the Adair County to the west.
