The National Mississippi River Museum, situated in Dubuque, Iowa, is owned and managed by the Dubuque County Historical Society. The Museum is affiliated to the Smithsonian Institution. The major attraction at the Museum is its beautiful aquarium, which features a wide variety of wildlife evocative of that found in the Mississippi river. The Museum also features an elegant café, an outdoor park, and a large exhibit space. The outdoor park of the museum also features a number of larger artifacts, including boats.
The most notable permanent exhibits at the Museum include the National Rivers Hall of Fame, Steamboat William M. Black, the Pfohl Boatyard, Fred W. Woodward Riverboat Museum, Woodward Wetlands, and the William Woodward Discovery Center. The most impressive temporary exhibit in the Museum is the Catfish Planet. The vibrant aquariums, wetlands, boatyards, the renovated train depot, and the historical exhibits at the national Mississippi River Museum offer the visitors an opportunity to take an informative and exciting journey on the Mighty Mississippi. Visitors are also allowed to interact with live critters and become barge pilots.
The Museum & Aquarium has also been accredited by the American Association of Museums. This accreditation is held only by 9% of the American Museums. The Museum offers a great learning experience and is a “must-see” in Dubuque, Iowa.
