Museums of the Amana Heritage Society

The Museums of the Amana Heritage Society, housed in 4 different locations in Iowa, represent the beliefs, history, and culture of the settlers of the Amana Colonies. These museums include the Homestead Store Museum, located on 4430 V Street in Homestead; the Communal Agriculture Museum on 505 P Street in South Amana; the Communal Kitchen & Cooper Shop Museum in Middle Amana; and the Amana Heritage Museum in Amana. The Homestead Store Museum aims at interpreting the role of commerce, industry, and Amana’s relationship with the rest of the world. The main exhibits at the Museum emphasize more on carpet weaving, tin-smithing, printing, bookbinding, and the woolen mill industry.

The Communal Agriculture Museum is housed in the oldest barn of South Amana. Its unique collection comprises of various agricultural implements used on Amana’s communal farms, including the equipment that was used for planting, plowing, and harvesting. Besides, the Museum also features a number of historical photographs and text that illustrate the communal farming in Amana. The Communal Kitchen & Cooper Shop Museum, on the other hand, is the former ‘Rudy Kuche’, the only communal-era kitchen remaining in Amanas. The main exhibits at the Museum include the dry sink with its wooden tubs, a large brick hearth, and the implements that used to prepare meals.

The Amana Heritage Museum features three 19th century buildings, including the Noe House, a communal kitchen established in 1864; the School House, established in 1870; and the authentic wash-house/woodshed. The Schoolhouse houses a Christmas Room, toys, dolls, a communal Amana school display, and a Kinderschule. The wash-house houses gardening and wine-making displays. The Museums of the Amana Heritage Society give a unique opportunity to relive the history of Amana and are a “must-see” for all those who visit Iowa.
