Old Capitol Museum

old capitol museum

The Old Capitol Museum, situated at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, aims at collecting, preserving, and interpreting the early history of Iowa. The Museum also endeavors to educate the local as well as national communities on the significance of the history of the State then, now, and in future. The Old Capitol Museum has served as the seat of government and education for over 150 years. Today, the museum has become a center of civic and culture discourse, and a symbol of pride and excellence for the state.

The Old Capitol Museum offers a number of exhibitions, educational programs, and academic scholarship. Besides, the Old Capitol Gift Shop provides a unique selection of Old Capitol memorabilia. The cornerstone of the Old Capitol was laid on Independence Day in 1840 and it was deeded to the University of Iowa in 1857. Since then, it has housed the University library, chapel, armory, offices, as well as classrooms.

The Old Capitol Museum has also been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The Humanities Gallery at the Museum reflects the glorious years it served as the first State Capitol (1846-1857) and the Iowa Territory’s last capitol (1842-1846). Other attraction at the Museum is its Discovery center. The Old Capitol Museum is a great learning museum and is a “must-see” in Iowa City.
