Quad Cities (Davenport)

downtown davenport

The five neighboring cities that constitute the Quad Cities include Davenport, Iowa; Moline, Illinois; Rock Island, Illinois; Bettendorf, Iowa; and East Moline, Illinois. These Quad Cities flank the Mississippi River in Iowa and Illinois in the Midwestern United States. This region was formerly known as the “Tri-Cities” and comprised of only Davenport, Moline, and Rock Island. At present, the Quad Cities is considered to be a single urban mass, which rightly exemplifies the multiple nuclei model of urban arrangement.

Davenport was established by Antoine Le Claire in 1836 and was named after his friend, Colonel George Davenport. Home of the famous Saint Ambrose University, Davenport is the county seat of the Scott County. The city is best known for its annual music festivals. The main festivals hosted by the city include the Mississippi Valley Fair, the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, and the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival, which is internationally acclaimed for Bix 7, a seven-mile foot race run during the festival.

The major tourist attractions in Downtown Davenport include the Davenport Skybridge, the Davenport public Library, the Figge Art Museum, River Music Experience, the Modern Woodmen Park, and the Putnam Museum & IMAX Theater. Palmer College of Chiropractic, the first Chiropractic school in the world, is situated just north of Downtown. The places of tourist interest in the Uptown include the Great Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, the North Park Mall, the South park Mall, the Credit Island Park, the Vander Veer Park, and Mount Ida, which offers breathtaking views of the Mississippi River Valley.
