Sioux City

Sioux City, county seat of Woodbury County, is situated in northwest Iowa. The city, together with southeastern South Dakota, northeastern Nebraska, and northwestern Iowa, is referred to as the Sioux-land. Sioux City has also been awarded the inaugural Iowa Great Places designation.

The major tourist attractions in the city include the Stone State Park and the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. The former is situated near the northernmost extent of the Loess Hills, overlooking the South Dakota/Iowa border. This State Park has been a favorite with day hikers, picnickers, and mountain bikers. The Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, situated within the boundaries of the Stone State Park, is a destination nature preserve, best known for its butterfly garden.

Other places of tourist interest in the city include the Tyson Events Center, a 10,000 seat arena in downtown; the KD Station, once listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the magnificent Grandview Park; the Pulaski Park, known for its baseball diamond facilities; the Latham Park, the only privately owned public park; the Riverside Park; and the Sergeant Floyd Monument, a National Historic Landmark that commemorates the burial site of Charles Floyd.

The First Bride’s Grave in Morningside’s South Ravine Park and the War Eagle Park also attracts a number of tourists to the Sioux City. The famous Chris Larsen Park features the Sergeant Floyd Riverboat Museum, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, and the Anderson Dance Pavilion. The Sioux City Public Museum, the Sioux City Art Center, the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, the Sioux City Community Theater, and the Woodbury County Courthouse are among the other sites of local interest. Sioux City is rich in history, culture, and heritage, and is certainly worth a visit.
