Chase County Courthouse

chase county courthouse, cottonwood

An architectural beauty and a symbol of the rich history of Cottonwood Falls, the Chase County Courthouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places is one of the important landmarks of this town in Kansas.

Designed by renowned Lawrence architect John G. Haskell, who has to his credit several structures of historic importance in Kansas; the three storied Courthouse was constructed in 1873 at a cost of USD 42,599 – garnered entirely through contributions from the residents of Cottonwood Falls.

The significance attached of the Chase County Courthouse comes from the fact that it is in use till date. It’s more than a century existence and operation makes Chase County Courthouse one of the oldest operating courthouses in the country and the oldest in the category for the State of Kansas. The Renaissance style building from the Louis XIII period built in limestone standing 113 feet tall coupled with the distinctive styled red mansard roof add loads of elegance to the structure. The interiors are equally attractive with high rising walls decorated with walnut staircase and barriers. The large courthouse bell added in 1886 adds a majestic touch.

With neatly manicured lawns and clear skies for a backdrop, Chase County Courthouse is definitely a leading attraction in Cottonwood Falls.
