Fort Larned National Historic Site

fort larned national historic site gateway

Situated right on the Santa Fe Trail in the town of Larned in Kansas, the Fort Larned National Historic Site was set up in 1859 to safeguard the interests of the coaches and other traffic on this route against possible attacks by Native Indians. Operational until 1869, as the railroad assumed precedence over the trail route, the Fort was eventually abandoned.

Converted into a national historic site in 1964, the present day Fort Larned National Historic Site has nine buildings which have been neatly restored and include furnished officer’s quarters, the barracks and commissary. The National Park Service which handles the Fort site has ensured that it ranks among the best conserved military posts on the celebrated Santa Fe Trail. Other structures on the site include a library, indoor exhibits, sod house, a pharmacy, blacksmith shop, school house and railroad depot.

Fort Larned National Historic Site, on the whole accomplishes its task of effortlessly transporting visitors back into an era that was filled with conflict and unrest.

Find in the fort premises a small museum and an attractive gift shop ideal to pick up tokens of the visit. Though special events and educational programs are present all year round, it is the summer time which is filled with greatest excitement as live demonstrations about life in 1860s is tastefully presented.

Nature Walks, bird watching and hiking trails are other admired leisure activities.
