Located south of Manhattan, Kansas, in the Flint Hills region, The Konza Prairie Biological Station or simply Konza Prairie is a vast expanse of tallgrass prairie operated collectively by the Kansas State University and the Nature Conservancy, since its acquisition by the latter in 1970’s.
Consisting of forest regions filled with chinquapin oaks and bur, shrub area and tallgrass, Konza Prairie is spread over 8600 acres and has a unique ecosystem supporting varied life forms. The numerous flowers types of different hues that flourish in the prairie make for charming views. However the real beauty of this ecological unit is that it preserves over 500 plant species, more than 200 bird species and collectively hundreds of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish, which otherwise may have disappeared in no time. The large groups of deer, bison and wild turkey present in the region make for a great sight.
Visitors are not admitted to the entire conservatory but parts of Konza Prairie can be thoroughly surveyed through the three interesting hiking trails stretching from 3 to 7 miles. However for those on an educational tour, the entire region is accessible and therefore researchers / students from all over the globe come in here to study this biological treasure.
The Konza Prairie should be visited to view the amazing scenic views and life forms thriving in a landscape undisturbed by mankind.
