Certainly one of the prettiest buildings on the landscape of Lawrence, Kansas, the present day Lawrence Visitor Information Center is housed in the ex- Union Pacific Depot. Restored in 1991, the Union Pacific Depot dates back to 1889 when it handled about 100 trains day on day. Today the renovated building is surrounded by attractive gardens decorated with sculptures and makes for a picturesque sight.
Operating in the Union Pacific Depot premises since 1996, the Lawrence Visitor Information Center plays an important role in guiding the large number of tourists who drop into Lawrence all year long. All information pertaining to the major attractions of Lawrence, history of the city, accommodations, recreational activities, dining and special events is readily available here. More importantly, the Lawrence Visitor Information Center offers brochures on five self-guided tours that cover the entire city. It is from this center that the tours of The Lawrence Massacre, Historic Trails of Douglas County, the Home Styles of Old West Lawrence Tour, Historic Cemeteries Tour, Quantrill's Raid and the Tour of Historic Old East Lawrence commence.
A near 30 minute documentary depicting the first decade of Lawrence history is aired on request. Also on display are railroad exhibits and historical items of Lawrence and the gracious volunteers are eager to offer all assistance.
