Lawrence

douglas county courthouse, lawrence

Lawrence City was founded in 1854 and is the county seat of Douglas County.

University of Kansas is perhaps the most important landmark of the city followed by the Haskell Indian Nations University. Historically, Lawrence is important as it was here in 1871 that the first railroad of Kansas started operations. Midland Railway, Liberty Hall, Bowersock Dam, the University of Kansas Natural History Museum, Watkins Community Museum of History and Lied Center of Kansas are some of the major tourist attractions in the city.
Sporting activity is abundant in Lawrence and both participants and spectators have ample fun. Home to the Clinton Lake state park and more than 50 local parks, Lawrence has opportunities for every outdoor recreation. Boating, fishing, golfing, hiking, camping, biking, rowing, swimming and horse riding are some of the activities that are popularly indulged in. Basket ball and tennis courts are found across the cityscape.

Art centers and galleries are aplenty with the tasteful and aesthetic collections in Lawrence Arts Center and Spencer Museum of Art being big draws. Downtown Lawrence with its Downtown Lawrence Gallery Walks is rated among the best downtowns in the entire country and surely offers more than a delightful shopping experience. Appetizing dining fare and pleasant accommodations make for a memorable Lawrence trip.
