The eighth largest city in Kansas, Manhattan is neatly tucked between the Kansas and Big Blue Rivers. It is nicknamed as “Little Apple”. Being part of the Flint Hills, the splendid group of hills in north-eastern Kansas, Manhattan is an enchanting and picturesque destination.
Kansas State University and Fort Riley are the most important landmarks of the city. The former has over 25,000 students on its rolls while the latter spread over 100,000 acres is arguably one of the most crucial U.S. Army military deputations.
Manhattan has 21 city parks with well maintained tennis courts, biking tracks, basketball courts, hiking, camping and picnicking spots. Also adding to the numerous recreational facilities is the vast Tuttle Creek Lake/Reservoir which is a tourist hotspot. Here, boating, fishing and water-skiing are the favorite pastimes with visitors. Another nature destination is the Konza Prairie Tallgrass Preserve that offers spectacular scenic views. Children and adults will completely enjoy the exciting fare at Sunset Zoo while golf lovers are bound to have an unforgettable outing at the Colbert Hills Golf Course, considered to be among the best in Kansas.
Events calendar of Manhattan has several exciting happenings. However the annual sports event of the Kansas State University and the outdoor musical event called Country Stampede Music Festival which is held annually are the biggest attractions in the city bringing large crowds from all over the state.
