Old Cowtown Museum

Wichita County in Kansas State hosts a unique open-air living history museum named the Old Cowtown Museum set on about 17 acres of land.

With an aim to showcase the historic past of both Wichita and Sedgwick Counties in Kansas from 1865 to 1880, the Old Cowtown recreates the life in various facets during this period. So come in here to experience a traditional wedding in the Church, or an in-service saloon, a farm with animals running in a conventional manner or the old style Christmas. Children and adults will be thrilled to participate in ‘games for children’ dating back to 1870. The Museum also owns more than 10,000 objects pertaining to Wichita and Sedgwick County belonging to the above period.

Included in the National Historic Register of Historic Places, Old Cowtown Museum has more than 40 replicated and restored buildings that multiply the charm of viewing a bygone era. Though a greater portion of this reconstruction pertains to the 1870’s, the arrangement ensures that the essence of the entire period is neatly presented. Museum staff dressed up in attires from this period; enact several roles that fit into the environment. Interpreters patiently explain the history of the museum and the significance of the numerous articles that find place in the displays.
