Located within the premises of the University of Kansas in Lawrence, The Helen Foresman Spencer Museum of Art (SMA) is both an art museum and a reservoir of artistic treasures used for learning art history. Named after Helen Foresman Spencer, a Kansas resident and art patron whose donation funded construction of the present building, the museum complex is also home to The Murphy Library of Art & Architecture and The Kress Foundation Department of Art History all formally inaugurated in 1978.
Spencer Museum of Art has seven galleries dedicated to the more than 25,000 permanent exhibits, while four galleries house the temporary displays. The vastness of this global collection can be gauged by studying the art categories on display which includes European, American, Japanese, Chinese and other East Asian art, sculptures, photography from medieval to contemporary times.
The Museum Store has a number of items related to the Spencer collection displayed inside apart from having original works by regional artists. Several events are conducted here to bring in participation from the public and increase awareness about art forms. Kids will love the interactive programs that promote creative art education.
SMA has well instructed brochures that help tourists to take a self guided tour across all sections. In case of assistance, trained volunteers are just a call away. Spencer Museum of Art succeeds in its mission to use art as a means to promote creativity and connect people from various backgrounds.
