The alarming decline of the prairie ecosystem in the Flint Hills region prompted the US National Park System to create a preserve in the year 1996 to protect the near 11, 000 acres of Tallgrass Prairie in this part of Kansas. 32 acres of Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve was subsequently transferred to Kansas Park Trust in 2004.
The preserve today includes a spring ranch house dating back to 1881 and a one-room schoolhouse among other structures and is now considered one of the 8 wonders of Kansas. In the prairie, visitors will admire the architecture and ethnic look of the historic Spring Hill Ranch made of limestone.
Tourists thoroughly enjoy the five hiking trails that permit them to get close to the prairie. Bus tours operate during summer months, i.e. between May and October. Entry to the preserve is free while donations are appreciated. The Visitor Center offers historical, recreational and ecological information about the prairie expanse, while the bookstore has extensive material about the prairie ecosystem.
A visit to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is the perfect way to feel and experience the beauty and charm of this breathtaking landscape. The rolling hills, wide skylines and eye catching panoramas have a mystifying feel that would certainly touch the spirit of each one of us. Photographers can click to their heart’s content the immaculate vista’s untouched by civilization.
