Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge, the capital city of Louisiana, is the second largest city in the state. Situated in the southeast portion of the state along the Mississippi River, Baton Rouge is a major petrochemical, industrial, and port center of the American South. The city owes its historical importance to its site upon the spectacular Istrouma Bluff, the first bluff upriver from the Mississippi delta.
The Downtown area is the city’s central business area. The magnificent Spanish Town is the most diverse neighborhood in the city. It is home to the State Capitol Building and is also known for the largest Mardi Gras Parade. The other major sections in Baton Rouge include the Beauregard Town, Garden District, and Old South Baton Rouge. Mid-City is home to several neighborhoods, including the Bernard Terrace, Ogden Park, and Capital Heights. LSU/Lakeshore is home to the Louisiana State University’s main campus, the City Park Lake, the University Hills, College Town, Carlotta Street, and Arlington. Lakeshore is also a favorite place for walking, jogging, and bicycling.
The main points of tourist interest in the city include the Alex Box Stadium, the Baton Rouge Zoo, the Baton Rouge River Center, an entertainment complex; the Blue Bayou Water-park; BREC, LSU, BRAS Highland Road Observatory; the Dixie Landin’ Amusement Park; F. G. Clark Center; the Memorial Stadium; Independence Park Botanic Gardens; and the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum. LSU Museum of Natural Science is the largest natural history museum in the nation and is the only comprehensive research museum in the south-central United States. The LSU Museum of Art, on the other hand, features an extensive collection of over 4, 000 objects, which mainly focus on Louisiana art. Other popular places in Baton Rouge include the LSU Rural Life Museum, the Magnolia Mound Plantation House, Mall of Louisiana, the Old State Capitol, and the Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
