Bayou Folk Museum

bayou folk museum, natchitoches

The Bayou Folk Museum, situated in Cloutierville, Louisiana, is a great place to explore, especially for those who are interested in the works of Kate Chopin or in life in the Cane River area. Now known as the Kate Chopin Home, the Bayou Folk Museum was founded by Mildred McCoy in 1965. The Museum was the former home of Alexis Cloutier, who had constructed it in the early 1800s.

This two-storey plantation home is constructed of heart cypress, pine, and handmade bricks. The upstairs wainscoting, the leaded glass windows, and the French doors are authentic and are nearly 200 years old. The three other historic buildings on the property include a blacksmith’s shop, a doctor’s office, and a building that houses rest rooms. The house was abandoned by Chopin in 1884.

At present, it is owned and managed by the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches. Various items that belonged to Kate Chopin, including the first edition of Bayou Folk are put on display at the Museum. The Museum offers a great learning experience and is certainly worth a visit.
