Cathedral of St. John the BaptistCathedral of St. John the Baptist, situated in Lafayette, Louisiana, was established in 1916. It was built in the Dutch Romanesque Style, on the site donated by Jean Mouton in 1821. It was the third church built in the town of Vermilionville, the present-day Lafayette. The major attraction on the Cathedral grounds is the 500 years old oak tree, which measures nearly 8.5 ft (2.6 m) in diameter and 125 feet (38 m) in height. It has a circumference of 26.7 feet (8.1 m) and a spread of 210 feet (64 m). Situated behind the Cathedral is an ancient graveyard, dating back to 1820. All the graves in this cemetery are above-ground graves. The Cathedral Complex also features a museum and an elegant gift shop. Pre-arranged tours of the historic St. John Live Oak Tree, the Cathedral Museum, Cemetery, gift shop, and the Cathedral interior are made available to the visitors. However, these tours have to be planned at least two weeks in advance.
