Destrehan Plantation

destrehan plantation

Destrehan Plantation, situated near Destrehan, St, Charles Parish, Louisiana, is the oldest documented property in the Louisiana Purchase. This magnificent antebellum home is a unique archetype of a plantation home outliving the oil refinery established around it. It was established in 1790 by Robin de Logny. Today, it is owned and managed by the River Road Historical Society, a non-profit organization, and is open to the public seven days a week.

Its guided tours help the visitors explore and understand the lives and lifestyles of the former residents of the plantation. The legacy of the Destrehan family, the unique architectural features of the plantation, and the main historic events that occurred at this site are explained in detail by costumed interpreters. The main exhibits at the plantation home include demonstrations of period crafts like candle-making, dying with indigo and open hearth cooking.

The major attraction within the walls of the Destrehan Plantation is a climate controlled room, which displays the original ‘Jefferson Document’ signed by Thomas Jefferson. The document dated 1804, is one of the most important documents in the Louisiana history. It assigns four men, one of whom is Jean Noel Destrehan, to the Orleans Territorial Council. The Destrehan Plantation also offers fabulous settings in their authentic mule barn for any event, including wedding, corporate dinner, and other special occasions.
