Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, named after Jean Lafitte, aims at protecting significant examples of rich cultural and natural resources of the Mississippi River Delta region of Louisiana. The Park also attempts to illustrate the influence of history and environment on the growth and development of the regional culture. The Park also features the park headquarters and 6 distinct sites, including the Acadian Cultural Center in Lafayette; the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center in Eunice; the Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center in Thibodaux; the Barataria Preserve in Marrero; Chalmette; and the French Quarter.
The Acadian Cultural Center, situated near the Vermilionville living history museum in Lafayette, features a number of exhibits on different Cajun-related topics, including the1755 expulsion of the Acadians from Nova Scotia. It also offers a documentary on Cajun culture, featured regularly in a 200-seat theater. The Center helps the visitors to explore and understand the story of the Acadian people who inhabited the bayous, prairies, and marshes of southeast Louisiana. The most impressive displays at the Center illustrate the migration, settlement, contemporary culture, and the origin of the groups of people who live in Lafayette.
The Acadian Cultural Center features a number of ranger talks and films, which explore the mysteries of Louisiana’s wildest place, the Atchafalaya Basin. In addition, the Ranger-guided boat tours on the Cocodrie cruise Bayou Vermilion are also offered by the Center. The Visitor Center hosts a number of programs and events that share the local traditions, including music, food, dance, and story-telling. The bookstore at the Center sells books, crafts, and music. The Center also offers educational programs on request.
