Jungle Gardens, situated on Avery Island, near New Iberia in Louisiana, is a 250-acre (1.01 sq-km) bird sanctuary and botanical garden. The gardens were established by Edward Avery McIlhenny, second son of Edmund McIlhenny, the founder of the McIlhenny Tabasco Company. The major attraction at the Jungle Gardens is the bird sanctuary, popularly known as the Bird City. The sanctuary is home to a number of snowy egrets and other wildfowl species. Thousands of egrets migrate to this region from early spring to late summer.
The Jungle Gardens are also home to a number of alligators, deer, black bears, nutria, otters, snakes, muskrats, and other wild animals. The main plants planted in the gardens include the Japanese camellias, Louisiana irises, Egyptian papyrus, wisteria, bamboo, azaleas, and hydrangeas. Another impressive feature of Jungle Gardens is the glass temple, set within a beautiful Chinese garden. This magnificent temple houses an ancient statue of Lord Buddha, which was gifted to McIlhenny in 1936. In addition, the gardens have many walking paths and 4 miles (6.4 km) of gravel roads lined with Spanish moss and live oak trees. Jungle Gardens is open to the public on all the days of a week, except for the few major holidays.
