LSU Rural Life Museum, situated in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is a research facility for the LSU (Louisiana State University) students who have undertaken heritage conservation studies. The Museum aims at exploring, preserving, and understanding the cultures and lifestyles of the pre-industrial Louisianans, including the French, Native Americans, Germans, Anglo-American, Spanish, People of African descent, and Acadians. All these people have made significant contributions to the rich culture and heritage of the state.
The extensive collection at the Museum comprises of utensils, tools, farming equipment, and furniture, which was used by the Louisianans in the pre-industrial era. The LSU Rural Life Museum also hosts a series of annual events and interpretive programs in order to commemorate the people who inhabited rural Louisiana. Some events are also organized to encourage involvement and support of people in Baton Rouge and other parts of the State of Louisiana.
Situated on the Burden Research Plantation, a 450-acre (1.8 sq-km) agricultural research experiment station owned by the LSU Agricultural Center, LSU Rural Life Museum is divided into three sections-the Louisiana Folk Architecture, the Barn, and the Working Plantation. A collection of 7 magnificent buildings with divergent construction traits, including the shotgun house, Acadian House, a dogtrot house, potato house, a country church, and a pioneer’s cabin with corn crib, exemplify the Louisiana Folk Architecture. The Barn, on the other hand, features several artifacts, which depict everyday rural life dating from pre-historic times to the early 20th century. The Working Plantation comprises of a complex of authentically furnished historic buildings that reconstruct the main activities of life on a 19th century working plantation.
