Lake Martin, situated near Lafayette, Louisiana, is best known as the home of the largest wading bird rookeries in North America. Several thousand spoonbills and egrets nest within this rookery during the peak months of the year. These beautiful birds can be photographed from the gravel road, which runs along the eastern side of the rookery. The best time for shooting is early in the morning, when direct front lighting is available. Other birds that can be spotted in the area include herons, Bared Owls, and hawks.
Lake Martin is also considered to be one of the best places in the state to photograph swamp scenes. The best times to capture the beauty of the cypress are the foggy mornings and the evenings. The boat dock to the north of the rookery is an ideal place for the scenic work. Besides, wild iris in April; mallow in June; and the large alligators can be photographed as well. The focal point of the lake is located at the Cypress Island Preserve. Located halfway between the Cajun towns of Breaux Bridge and St. Martinville, Lake Martin is well known for its scenic beauty and is certainly worth a visit.
