Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site

Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site aims at exploring and understanding the cultural interplay among the various communities settled along the Bayou Teche. This site was initially inhabited by the Attakapas Indians and was later made a part of a royal French land grant. In the early 1800s, after the grant was sold, this land was acquired by Pierre Olivier Duclozel de Vezin to raise cattle, sugarcane, and cotton. He also built the magnificent Maison Olivier on the site.

Maison Olivier, the central feature of the Longfellow-Evangeline SHS, features a simple, unique architectural form that depicts a blend of Caribbean, Creole, and French influences. This circa 1815 plantation house is an extraordinary example of a Raised Creole Cottage and was extensively renovated in 1840. Another major attraction at the historic site is the live replica of the Acadian Farmstead, located along the bank of Bayou Teche. The Farmstead exemplifies an ideal single-family farm of the 1800s. The site features a barn, slave quarters, and the family home with a bread oven and an outdoor kitchen. In addition, the pasture situated adjacent to the barn houses cattle typical of those raised by the Acadians and the Creoles.

Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site became the first park to be included in the Louisiana State Parks System in 1934. Maison Olivier was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974. The site also hosts a number of interpretive programs and cultural events throughout the year. Guided tours of the historic Maison Olivier are also made available to the visitors.
