Louisiana Old State Capitol

louisiana old state capitol

The Old Louisiana State Capitol, situated in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is home to the Old State Capitol Center for Political and Governmental History that houses a number of state-of -art exhibits. It is popularly known as the ‘Castle of Baton Rouge’ or the ‘Louisiana Castle’. The Old Capitol Building, a National Historic Landmark, served as the Legislature building until 1932, when the New Louisiana State Capitol was established. The Old Capitol has since been used as the seat of the Works Progress Administration. It also houses federally chartered veteran’s organizations.

The Old State Capitol was renovated in the 1990s and now functions as a museum. It features many displays pertaining to the political history in Louisiana. The most popular exhibit at the museum is the gun that was used to kill Governor Huey Long. The museum also hosts a number of annual events, including an annual ball wherein the participants are required to perform dances of the French culture while wearing the traditional 18th and 19th century dress.

A number of historically and culturally significant buildings are located within a walking distance from the old state capitol. Some of the major landmarks nearby include the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum, the Old Louisiana Governor’s Mansion, St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Baton Rouge, and the internationally acclaimed Shaw Center. The Old Louisiana State Capitol is, no doubt, the only true castle in America, in the genuine sense of the word, and is a “must-see” for all those who visit Baton Rouge.
