The Louisiana State Museum is an extensive system of museums run by the Louisiana government. The main branch of the Louisiana State Museum is situated at Baton Rouge. The various museums run in New Orleans include The Cabildo, New Orleans Mint, The Arsenal, The Presbytere, the Creole House, the 1850 House, the Jackson House, and Madame John’s Legacy. Other branches of the Louisiana State Museum include the Old Courthouse Museum in Natchitoches and the E. D. White Historic Site at Thibodaux.
The Louisiana State Museum at Baton Rouge encompasses an area of over 69,000 square feet (6400 square-meters). It features impressive, thematic exhibits on the various aspects of Louisiana industry, history, and culture. The two permanent exhibitions housed in the Museum include Experiencing Louisiana: Discovering the Soul of America and Grounds for Greatness: Louisiana and the Nation. These exhibitions offer a comprehensive experience of every aspect of Louisiana history, from Louisiana Purchase to the Mardi Gras traditions.
Some of the most impressive exhibits at the Museum include the Civil War submarines, Buddy Guy, musical artifacts from Fats Domino, the iconic New Orleans Lucky Dog Cart, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, and Aaron Neville. The Museum also houses challenging exhibitions, pertaining to Louisiana’s art and culture, in its second-floor gallery space. The Museum also offers group and school tours at discounted rates.
