The university lately launched the Forever LSU campaign so that the decades of under funding could be reversed. This fundraising drive is considered to be the most ambitious one in its history. The university could take birth because of the grants by the United States government in the years 1806, 1811, and 1827. Initially, it was supported by a military academy and is still steeped in military customs as seen in the nickname of the school, "The Ole War Skule". LSU is very well known for its "stately oaks" as described in the LSU alma mater’s lyrics. Stately oaks are known to be one of the reasons declared by Thomas Gaines in The Campus as a Work of Art as among the most beautiful campuses in America. University’s main library collection is an abode of nearly three million volumes that are housed in Troy H. Middleton Library located on the main quadrangle of the University. It is both a U.S. Regional Depository Library and a general use library that houses papers and publications from the United Nations, federal government and U.S. Patent Office.
