Magnolia Mound Plantation

magnolia mound plantation

The Magnolia Mound Plantation House, situated nearly one mile (1.6 km) south of downtown Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is well known in Southern Louisiana for its age, outstanding collections, and the quality of restoration. Magnolia Mound Plantation is one of the earliest buildings in Baton Rouge. The vernacular architecture of the house and of other structures on the Plantation is influenced by the early settlers from West Indies and France.

The Plantation House was established in 1791 as a small settler’s house. It was initially owned by an early settler, James Hillen, who arrived in the area in 1786. It also served as the center of a 900-acre (360-hectare) operation with frontage on the Mississippi River. The Historic House Museum on the Plantation is specially designed for events, such as Christmas, funerals, weddings, and Lent and summer. Other major attractions on the plantation include the Open Hearth Kitchen, Overseer’s House, the Quarter House, the Crop Garden, the Pigeonnier, and the magnificent Carriage House.

At present, Magnolia Mound is a popular museum known for its educational programs, lectures, workshops, festivals, and other special events. It mainly aims at interpreting and illustrating the lifestyle of the French Creoles who established a fascinating culture of Southern Louisiana. The Plantation house holds a wide range of collection, spanning from the colonial era to the early statehood. This extensive collection comprises of furnishings and decorative arts, including the locally made furniture from Louisiana’s colonial period; French pieces, which depict the ties of the sophisticated planter with his family in France; English and French ceramics; locally made textiles; furniture obtained through the major port of New Orleans; and inventory records and accounts from the colonial period.
