The Melrose Plantation, situated in Natchitoches, Louisiana, is one of the few historic plantations of the Old South. It was established in the year 1796. The Site encompasses an area of 6 acres (0.02 sq-km), featuring a number of historical buildings. The three main historical structures on the site include the circa 1796 Yucca House, which was a Colonial residence; the circa 1800 African House, which was a slave fort and provision house; and the circa 1833 Big House, an early Louisiana plantation home.
The African House is the only remaining structure of Congo-like architecture on the North American Continent. Melrose Plantation was also the home of Clementine Hunter, one of the most celebrated primitive folk artists of Louisiana. Clementine’s works are on display at Clementine’s House, located on the site. Other historic buildings on site include the Weaving House, the Bindery, and the Writer's Cabin, Ghana. The Melrose Plantation has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and is worth visiting.
