The City of Natchitoches, the oldest permanent settlement in Louisiana Purchase, is the parish seat of Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. It was founded in 1714 by Louis Juchereau de St. Denis and was named after the Natchitoches Indian tribe. The City was incorporated on February 5, 1819. Natchitoches is best known for its Christmas Lighting Festival, which is celebrated on the first Saturday in each December.
The City of Natchitoches is a major tourist destination in the state of Louisiana. The major tourist attraction in the City is the Cane River National Heritage Area, which features a number of historic sites, including the Melrose Plantation, Magnolia Plantation, Oakland Plantation, Cane River Heritage Scenic Byway, Bishop Martin Museum, Los Adaes State Historic Site, Old Courthouse Museum, and Fort St, Jean Baptiste State Historic Site. Natchitoches attracts over a million tourists every year. It is home to nearly 11 national chain hotels and a number of 50 bed and breakfast inns. The Downtown River walk is the main tourism center of the city. The major attraction in the Historical District is the mini “Walk of Fame”.
Other major points of tourist interest in the city include the Bayou Pierre Alligator Park, the Kisatchie National Forest, and the Natchitoches Events Center in the Natchitoches National Historic Landmark District. Some of the major cultural events hosted by the city every year include Mardi Gras Magic Festival, Mardi Gras Parade, Melrose Arts and Crafts Festival, Cane River Festival, Rebel State Spring Festival, and the Ashland Spring Festival.
