Old Governor's Mansion

old governor's mansion, baton rouge

The Old Louisiana Governor's Mansion, situated in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was constructed under the governorship of Huey P. Long, in the year 1930. This magnificent mansion is well known for its stucco Georgian construction. Designed by James Hoban, it is considered to be an exact copy of the White House. The building features a full basement, an attic, and two floors. There are 14 windows and open balustrades set in a small gable projecting from the slate mansard roof.

The most impressive feature of the building is the pediment, the design of which is based on the Great Seal of the State of Louisiana. The pediment is supported by 4 huge 30 ft (9.1 m) Corinthian columns and is adorned with carvings depicting a pelican feeding her young. Governor Jimmie H. Davis moved into the present Governor’s Mansion in 1961, and thus ended the old mansion’s 32 years as the official residence of the Governors of Louisiana.
