Plantation AlleyPlantation Alley refers to the part of the Great River Road in Louisiana. It offers a dignified procession of as many as 30 mansions and 10 other ancient properties that sit majestically on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. These historic mansions feature a unique antebellum architecture bounded by pecan groves and sugarcane fields. Most of these mansions have been converted to hotels or bed-and-breakfast inns and are open to the public for tours. One of the largest plantations along the Plantation Alley is the Nottoway Plantation. The Nottoway Mansion is a gem of Greek revival architecture. The magnificent Houmas House, the center of a 20, 000 acre (81 sq-km) sugarcane plantation, is a Greek revival mansion furnished beautifully with antiques. The Oak Alley Plantation, on the other hand, is the most photographed plantation along the Alley. This columned mansion is framed by live oaks and has been the setting of several movies, including Primary Colors and Interview with the Vampire. Other major attractions along the Plantation Alley include the Laura Plantation, the source of the famous Brer Rabbit tales, and the spectacular Destrehan Plantation, the oldest home included in the Louisiana Purchase. Traveling Louisiana’s River Road is a great experience and helps the visitors to explore and understand the challenges of preserving the romantic past, a multi-ethnic heritage, and dealing with environmental issues, and a growing tourist trade.
