Shreveport

Shreveport, the seat of Caddo Parish, Louisiana, is the third-largest city in the State. It is also considered to be the cultural and commercial hub of the Ark-La-Tex, the area of confluence of Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Located at the meeting point of the Red River and the Texas Trail, the City of Shreveport was established in 1836 by the Shreve Town Company. The City was named in honor of Captain Henry Miller Shreve, who made the Red River navigable in the 1830s.

Shreveport is also a major tourist destination particularly noted for its visual and performing arts. The R. W. Norton Art Gallery features extensive collections of European and American sculptures, paintings, and decorative arts. Other major venues of performing and visual arts in the city include the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, the Strand Theater, Multicultural Center of the South, Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, Robinson Film Center, Barnwell Memorial Garden and Art Center, Meadows Museum of Art, Southern University Museum of Art, and the East Bank Theater.
Red River Revel is a popular annual cultural event hosted by the city. It features food, entertainers, and local music. Other major festivals celebrated in Shreveport include Mardi gras, Louisiana Film Festival, and Holiday in Dixie, Mudbug Madness, Louisiana State Fair, Independence Bowl, and the Shriner’s Circus. The City is also home to the world’s largest rose garden, the National Rose Garden. The Azalea Gardens, the Gardens of the American Rose Center, the Sci-Port Discovery Center, Water Town USA, River-walk Park, Clyde Fant Park, Chimp Haven, and the 8th Air Force Museum are among the major tourist attractions in the city.

The well-frequented museums in Shreveport include the Touchstone Wildlife & Art Museum, Barnwell Garden & Art Center, Shreveport Municipal Auditorium, Pioneer Heritage Center at LSUS, and the Antique, Classic Vehicle and Firefighters Museum of Shreveport. Shreveport is also known as ‘Hollywood South’. It is ranked next to California and New York in volume of film production.
