St. Martinville, the parish seat of St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, is situated 18 miles (28.9 km) southeast of Lafayette, along Bayou Teche. This region served as the Attakapas Post until the Louisiana Purchase took place in 1803. Today, St. Martinville is best known for the hardworking spirit of its community, agriculture, and its tourism industry. Located in the heart of the Cajun County, this city is considered to be the birthplace of Cajun tradition and culture.
St. Martinville was once considered to be a cultural Mecca and was appropriately nicknamed as Petit Paris. The City is the third oldest town in Louisiana and is also known for the architecture of its magnificent, historic buildings. The major tourist attractions in the City include St. Martin de Tours Church, the oldest church parish in southwest Louisiana; La Maison Duchamp, a National Historic Landmark; the Duchamp Opera House; and the Evangeline Oak. The main annual cultural events hosted by the city include the Pepper Festival, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of St. Martinville, and La Grande Boucherie des Cajuns, sponsored by La Grande Boucherie des Cajuns, Inc.
