State Capitol

louisiana state capitol

The Louisiana State Capitol situated in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, houses the governor’s office, the Louisiana State Legislature, and parts of the executive branch. This 450-foot (137-m) tall building is the tallest state capitol building in the United States. It stands on a 27-acre (11-hectare) tract, which features the magnificent Capitol Gardens. The Louisiana State Capitol has been designated as a National Historic Landmark.

The most impressive features of the State Capitol are the magnificent sculptures depicting scenes from Louisiana and U.S. History. A series of steps at the main entrance have the names of all of the United States written on them in order of their admittance into the Union. The first thirteen steps symbolize the original Thirteen Colonies, while the rest signify the other 48 states. Alaska and Hawaii are listed together on the 49th step as they were admitted to the Union after the State Capitol was constructed.

The present State Capitol, Louisiana, is entwined with the political career of former Governor Huey Pierce Long. The new building for the statehouse, inaugurated on May 16, 1932, was constructed on the site that was once Louisiana State University and formerly a military post, the Pentagon Barracks. Today, Pierce Long’s Memorial, a statue showing him holding a model of his monument, stands regally in the English Garden.
