The State of Maine, situated in the New England region of the north-eastern USA, was formerly a part of Massachusetts. The territory of Maine was originally inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking people. The first European settlement was established in the region in 1604 by a French party. The first English settlement, a small Popham Colony, was set up in 1607 by the Plymouth Company. In the 1620s, many other English settlements were established along the coast of Maine. However, in due course of time, most of these settlements were wiped out by the rugged climate of the region and constant Indian attacks. The American and the British forces competed for this territory during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. As the population of the region was increasing at a rapid rate, Maine was declared as the 23rd state on March 15, 1820, as a part of the Missouri Compromise. As per this compromise, both Maine and Missouri were admitted into the Union, while keeping a balance between the slave and Free states. The original capital of Maine was Portland until 1832, when it was shifted to Augusta. |
