Aerial Lift Bridge

The aerial Lift Bridge is one of the do-not-miss destinations in the seaport city of Duluth - Minnesota. Built on the St Louis River in the year 1905, under the architectural guidance of Thomas McGilvray - a city engineer, the Aerial Lift Bridge was designed to facilitate transportation between the two sides of the Duluth Harbor. However, the present day appearance of the bridge came from the major alterations that were undertaken in 1930.
Today, the Aerial Lift Bridge ensures that huge ships can effortlessly traverse the waters underneath while vehicles and pedestrians can pass over the channel at the same time. Owned and maintained by the City of Duluth, the bridge was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
A scene to remember would be looking at the plummeting counterweights that raise the bridge over 140 feet high and allow the gigantic ships to pass. The lift bridge rises to these heights in less than a minute’s time.
With flowing waters and blue skies for a backdrop, the beauty of the majestic Aerial Lift Bridge makes for a great picture, especially during sunset and under nightlights. Visit this engineering marvel to know why it is admired by one and all.
