Frontenac State Park

frontenac state park

A bird-watcher’s paradise, the Frontenac State Park located in Minnesota along the banks of the Mississippi River boasts of being safe haven for more than 250 bird species, including the rare bald eagle. A wide variety of trees, with cottonwood, maple, oak, elm and aspen being the prominent ones, cover the park and together play the perfect host for the bird population.

Spread out on more than 2250 acres of land, Frontenac State Park is just about 10 miles from Red Wing and about 5 miles from Lake City. Binoculars are a must to have a close view of the stunning bird species.

Lake Pepin, the widest natural formation of the Mississippi River, with its waters touching the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin borders the park. While the lake waters offer water skiing, boating and swimming opportunities, another attraction overlooking Lake Pepin is the 450 feet tall limestone bluff called Garrard’s Bluff. Also referred to as Point No-Point on account of the optical illusion it creates, this structure and the view from here are truly enchanting.

Recreational opportunities are aplenty all year round with fishing, camping, hiking, boating, swimming and picnicking being hot favorites with visitors. Winter time has skiing, sledging and snowmobiling all making for an exciting trip for outdoor enthusiasts.

The park also holds archeological significance as excavations carried out during the 1970s have unearthed Native Indian artifacts, some dating back to 400 BC. Educational trips that are both informative and enjoyable, are available.
