Mille Lacs Lake

One of the preferred vacation destinations in Minnesota, the Mille Lacs Lake is a recreational hub that thrives with visitors, be it summer or winter.
Mille Lacs Lake is the state’s second largest inland lake stretching over 132,500 acres. With numerous fish species inhabiting its waters, the lake is a celebrated fishing spot not only in the summers, but also in winters when ice-fishing is a rage. However, fishing apart, tourists can engage in swimming, canoeing, boating, biking, hiking, golfing and sailing during summers while in winters cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are popular.

Nature lovers can also take pleasure in the bird and wildlife species that inhabit the lake and its surroundings. Bird watchers will spot black terns, Forest songbirds, Baltimore orioles, white-throated sparrows, American goldfinches, osprey and hairy woodpeckers along with the other attractive bird varieties that thrive here. Wild animals like porcupines, black bears, deer, beavers, fox and raccoon can be spotted.

The vegetation is the other striking aspect of the Mille Lacs Lake Area. From bright wildflower species to huge trees like oak, maple, aspen, black spruce and basswood several plant species are found thriving either on the shoreline or the lowlands. Fall is the season to witness the bright and spectacular hues of the flora that bring grandeur to the lake setting. Do not forget to walk into the visitor center where you can watch wildlife being fed.
