The Depot / St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center

St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center in Duluth is situated in the building that was once home to the Union Railroad Depot, popularly called as “The Depot”. This captivating French Norman architectural style structure in downtown Duluth was built in 1892 and operated as Duluth’s railroad station for several years. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, the building was inaugurated as St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center in 1973, after significant renovations.
Inside ‘The Depot’, find a treasure trove of artifacts housed in four separate museums and a theatre that showcases performing arts. The chief attraction for the thousands of visitors pouring in is the collection of vintage steam locomotives and the ancient wooden coaches showcased in the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. With its display changing every year, there is something new awaiting regular visitors. Equally eye-catching is the Duluth Children's Museum that has a vast exhibit fare to attract kids and activities that enable children to enhance their learning in a fun filled way. The third museum is The Depot Square, where the city of Duluth during the period 1910 to 1920 is beautifully recreated. Art lovers are treated to the exquisite art creations of regional artists displayed in the Duluth Art Institute.
The Duluth Playhouse, the theatre that offers exciting theatre experiences is also housed in The Depot.
Overall, the Depot/St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center make for a great adventure and experience for the entire family.
