The Fitzgerald Theater, a very old stage venue in Saint Paul, is the home of the American public media. It is among many theaters built by the Shubert Theatre Corporation. Initially it was known as the Sam S Shubert Theater. The theater was designed for the Shuberts by the Chicago architectural firm of Marshall and Fox, architects of many theaters. In 1933, it was used as a movie outlet known as the World Theater. The land was bought in 1980 by the Minnesota Public Radio and restored as a site for the Prairie Home in 1986.
The Fitzgerald Theater was renamed in 1994 after a native, F. Scott Fitzgerald.
The theater has been a hot site of a memorable election eve program organized for Walter Mondale, former US Vice President and US Senate candidates Norm Coleman, former mayor of St. Paul.
The theater appeared in the 2005 film "Prairie Home Companion", directed by Robert Altman. In this movie, while a fixed level of realism is mixed by using the intact venue for the show, the normal equipment was eschewed for the sets designed for the movie.
